A sad day in squirrelandia

A sad day in squirrelandia, #1

I yeeted our downspouts, so the squirrels no longer have an easy route up into our attic. They are fairly unhappy about this, and spent a bunch of time this morning running from tree to treee in the backyard, trying to find an alternative way in.

Basket

Rack Lyfe

A half-height size huge Wald basket (the half-height part is a Rivendell variant – prototyped by a couple of people at Rivendell, put into production for Blue Lug, imported back into the USA (?) by Merry Sales, then sold to me by Rivendell) zip-tied to the GT’s rack, because now that we’re in the plague years I’ve gone back to grocery bags and a basket is a better way of holding them in instead of wrapping an elastic cord around the bags.

Another pass at maskmaking

Facemask round 2 (prototype)

A larger (9×8" instead of 6×4.5") mask made from bedsheet scraps and some pink cat&mouse satin I had lying around in my sewing mess.

It’s definitely a prototype; I managed to forget most of what I did when I made up the previous masks so there are a lot of bodges in this design. It still works, but it’s not as pretty as I’d like.

Bicycle delivery

Bicycle delivery

Dropping off a constructeur (== I built the entire bicycle up before handing it over) bicycle before turning around and going (eventually; it was a lovely day out today so I spent most of the rest of the afternoon idling around) over to Trader Joe’s to pick up some groceries.

Fixie shopping

Gone shopping

Down to the Big Big Store for bananas, mandarins, cereal, and a couple of cans of black beans. The porteur-width VO handlebars I put on this machine (as well as a shorter Mutant) mean I can fit two grocery bags side-by-side on the front rack and still have breathing room for my hands.

I’m going to put a size huge Wald basket (the half-height 1392 that Rivendell sells) onto this machine so I don’t need to immediately sew up a huge porteur bag to carry groceries in. And since we’re in the plague years, most of the stores I go to won’t let you use your own bags anyway so a Wald basket + grocery bags + some sort of tarp is just as good.

Frame (re)building

modular dropouts, #1

Setting up a Rube Goldberg-style fixture to braze a pair of modular dropouts onto a frame I’m modifying. I can’t just bolt the dropout inserts in and start brazing, because the inserts are aluminum and I don’t want to warp or melt them, so …

Candycanes

Candycane handlebars

I tweaked the sweet fixie by replacing the brake cable housing with compressionless housing, the handlebars with another set of porteur-width Velo Orange rando bars, and the old slimy blue tape with new Cinelli “world champion” candycane tape. It’s much more flaming now even though the brake cable housing isn’t the old rainbow stuff.

You’re gonna need a bigger bag.

You're gonna need a bigger bag.

I went out to Henry Higgins this morning to pick up a couple of dozen bagels, but they tossed in an extra dozen, which loaded my historical reenactment porteur/rando bag to within an inch of its life. Time to fire up the sewing machine, I guess.

Apocolyptic shopping

Apocolyptic shopping trip

It may be the apocolypse, but we’ve still got to eat. (We have to poop as well, but toilet paper is one thing that is not available at the store. I may end up having to jury-rig a bidet so we can pressure wash our butts after doing the necessary.)

Before and after

Kerchop (1)

Kerchop (2)

I’m putting couplers (and through-axle dropouts, and disk mounts, and probably some other stuff) into a frame, and today I finally got around to cutting the downtube and dry-fitting the couplers into place.

If you look closely, you’ll see that the coupler halves are not completely level with each other; that’s because the frame warped when being brazed, and went I cut the downtube the two pieces sprung in different directions. So before I braze the coupler into place I’m going to put the DS into compression so that the halves will line up square with each other and with the frame. (And then I’m going to cut the seat tube for a ritchey-style breakaway joint, so any further unwarping will show up there. Oh well; I’ll burning that bridge when I get to it.)
