Shipping a large rando bag

Softsided bags are a lot easier to ship than rando racks.

(virtual) Friday Dust Mite Blogging™

Scissorfooted mite

Edward scissorfeet?

Posted on Saturday morning because just as I was about to post this photo Russell’s computer decided to die horribly, so instead of posting I spent the last hour running around trying to find parts to get it to actually boot. Spoiler: we didn’t succeed, so I guess it will be time to take it back to my brother so he can try to fix it one more time. Ugh!

Filthy commerce

Black Friday sale, #11

I built a 6x9 rando bag/rack combo on spec, so I suppose that I need to add an odd&ends page to my rackbuilding website.

Vegan thanksgiving

Stockholm Syndrome thanksgiving dinner

Rice-filled soyball, vegan cranberry casserole, jellied cranberry sauce (not aspic, even though it certainly looks like it.)

Queuing up at the hummingbird feeder

A hummingbird waits in line for the feeder

The hummingbird that’s at the feeder is very possessive and will drive off anybody who tries to belly up to the bar while (s)he’s there. So all this other hummingbird can do is hover there and flap impatiently.

More than halfway done

Bespoke fop sidewalk(tm)

Now it’s time to rip up the brickwork in the driveway and build up the sand bed to clear the HUGE MONSTER TREE ROOT that is snaking up the middle of the driveway.

Thank goodness it’s not concrete

3 (working) hours later

The city condemned our sidewalk (as well as most of the other sidewalks on the block) because tree roots were pushing sections up in the air. But we have (mainly) brick sidewalks, while everyone else has concrete, so I can take up the bricks, level the bedding layer, and relay the sidewalk without spending hundreds/thousands of dollars hiring contractors to cut out the old pavement and pour new stuff in its place (it’s cost me $140 so far – $35 for sand, $100 to have the sand delivered, and $5 for a roll of yellow caution tape that I wrapped around the working area to keep people from tripping and killing themselves until after I’ve finished levelling the thing – and I’ll probably be in for another $50 or so for edging and fill dirt to build up the surrounding yard to the new sidewalk level.)

Oh, and I had to pay the city $60 for permission to repair my own sidewalk. I must admit that I’m kind of baffled that we pay over $5k/year in property taxes and still have to pay to do mandatory sidewalk repairs. I think if I could do it all over again I’d suggest strongly to my younger self to rent in town and buy a summer cottage in the mountains instead.

I am inordinately pleased with this machine

The kit bike stops at the virtual house on Leif Erikson Drive

It might be stockholm syndrome, but this machine seems to ride faster, more effortlessly, and more comfortably than any of my other bicycles, and it feels like a step down when I need to use a different machine for shopping. It will be a sad day when I strip it down to frame+fork+rack+stem for powdercoating; maybe I’ll punt and use auto paint instead?

Look what I found!

A giant stack of Lego pieces

This is about (shudder) 80% of the Lego pieces we’ve got in the house. I picked these up while cleaning out the library to convert it into Silas’s new bedroom, and I’m still finding pieces hiding under things after this cleanup.
