It’s unpleasantly hot enough outside so that I end up making one pass a day at the torch; I prep a bunch of metal for brazing, then go out to my shop and work with the torch until I start to wilt from heat exhaustion, then come back inside to set up the next batch of things to braze on.

A IBM Thinkpad 701c, with the collapsing keyboard. A 486dx4 w/ 40mb of memory and a 20gb disk, running Mastodon (Linux 2.0) w/o the X Windows Disaster but just a bunch of virtual ttys like G-d Intended.
At least it would be running if the CMOS battery hadn’t have died about 10 years ago, and if there wasn’t an intermittent error somewhere near the top of memory. As it is I’m now copying the disk to my macboox so I can fire up the system in a virtual machine and see if I can find the disk geometry (so I can coax the thing into booting after I’ve ripped out the dead cmos battery and replaced it with one that actually has some charge to it.)

Three rack platforms brazed up (modulo the central crossbraces) and now sitting in the bathtub to soak off the excess flux. All of them are for Elephant NFE’s, so all the setup I need to do is configure one jig for brazing on the fork leg & fork crown stays (and then cut the stays, plus light mounts, plus crossbraces.)

Three racks for Elephant NFEs – an 10x8" blasdel-style perimeter (& the central rail loop thingie), a 12x10.5" porteur-style rectangular one, and an 11x10.5 oh-drat-I-mismeasured-the-width one. And this means that I can finally use the NFE fork jig I fabricated out of a broken NFE v1 fork last fall.

When I went over to Trader Joe’s today, I returned – as is traditional – via a roundabout loop through the highlands of SE Portland, taking in as many of the unimproved roads as I could in the process of the trip. Alas, this did not end up working well for the emergency randonneuse’s remaining tubeless tire – some of the sections of unimproved road were really unimproved, which made the rear tire start to burp, and it didn’t take too much of that before the tire seal just gave up the ghost and fell into a long slow deflation (slow enough so I could ride it, notice when it was getting low, then pump in some air to bring it back up to a reasonable pressure, but not so slow I could make it home w/o having to refill the tire twice.!)
So since it’s summertime I think I’m going to yank off the fenders and put in a pair of Flat Magnets (Pacenti Pari-Motos) and see how they work on this machine. (It’s designed for Hutchinson Confréries, so going from 33mm to 38mm should not be a problem for anything other than brake bridge fender clearance.) Pity it’s not possible to get pink 45mm Planet Bike fenders any more, but as a substitution maybe I can fit a set of V-O Zeppelins into the frame?

A Milburn 27L from 1920 (serial #2-1818-7) that lives in East Portland. Not an extraordinarily fast EV, but well suited to the metalled roads of that era.

Ozy’s fur keeps on growing out. He’s starting to regrow the mane he used to have (one of the pictures from the Utah humane society that first had him showed a fairly magnificent mane, all of which got lopped off when they did an aggressive lion cut to deal with his tangled and grubby fur.
He’s huger now, some because he spent the last month and change inhaling all the catfood we would put out, but mainly because of excessive fur.

Sandals, because (a) my toes have been getting blistered and infected (yuk!) on longer rides, so if something toeless can stop it so much the better, and (b) whythehellnot™ – sandals will better show off some of my more spectacularly femme socks, and if getting old is worth anything it’s worth giving even less of a fuck about what fragile masculinity thinks of me.
