Test ride

New rear wheel test ride

I laced up a new rear wheel for the disco travel bike, so had to take it out for a test ride ASAP. 28h instead of my traditional 32h or 36h, and the rim matches the front rim (not accidentially; the front wheel is a SON SL'ed one, and I had a spare that I could disassemble to get a matching (OEM) rim + black spokes that were – happily! – the length I needed to lace up the new hub) so the machine drifts a little closer to being matchy-matchy.

Intermission

My flat magnets demanded a sacrifice this afternoon

One of the patches on my rear inner tube gave way when I was on the return leg of a short 25 mile loop, so I had to take a rest stop on the Springwater Trail to disassemble the rear end of the bicycle, hunt down the leak, reinflate the tire, and then take this picture before finishing the ride home.

The helpful cat

Mavis naps on her heated clicky platform

She’s helping keep the macbook from going into hibernation while I was away from the console. Helpful! (modulo the cat fur which will inevitably work its way into the air ducts and start clogging up the processor fan)

Dust Mite lurks in the bedclothes

Dust Mite was lurking in the bedclothes tonight. Perhaps they were looking for a friend?

Acetylene refill

My acetylene tank ran empty today just as I was starting to glue together a couple of racks, so out to Airgas went I to swap it for one that actually contains acetylene.

Railroad photo of the day

The train goes by

A P&W freight zips past me at the Stark St crossing in SE Portland. This is a capture from a short film that I accidentially took when I toggled the iphone from camera to movie mode, so it’s lower resolution and maybe a bit sharper than it would have been as an actual photo?

I’m not going to look for a train at this particular sign

I went to the hardware store to pick up some spray paint and I could not resist.

Trolley freight

An Indiana Railroad motor delivers coal to a power plant

An Indiana Railroad motor hauls a short coal train somewhere in Indiana. Post WW2, maybe? It’s an eBay photo, so there is very little information about it (and there’s pitifully little indexed information about the freight remnants of the IRR on the web, so that’s no help) but the bus sailing jauntily on by makes me assume it’s after the last passenger trains ran.

A pile of groceries

Pile of groceries

Looks can be deceptive, because there are a lot of canned & jarred goods in this stack of grocery bags. Maybe 100 pounds? The bicycle certainly handled like it was pulling that much weight.
