A little bit of wear and tear

One of these is a chainring, the other one is scrap aluminum.

The Truvativ 34t chainring that used to be on the mlcm is perhaps a little too worn to be useful for anything other than scrap metal. It wore out fairly quickly, too; I would be surprised if I’d put more than ~4500 miles onto the bike since I installed the crankset that used to hold this ring.

The 50t big ring that came with this was not quite as worn as this one, but it was still worn enough for me to want to recycle it as well.

50 and 34 tooth are sizes in which one can still get steel chainrings from Truvativ. It took a couple months for both to come in from a long way up the supply chain, but presuming those weren’t the last two in the warehouse it might not take as long in Portland.

There are several vendors who sell steel chainrings. Surly makes particularly robust ones which I’ve had pretty good luck with. What I need to do is get into the habit of replacing the chainrings after a fixed interval; probably pull the 34t gear after 5000 miles, then the 50t gear after another 3000.

It doesn’t help that I do a lot of riding on unimproved roads.
