This was a case of deliberately underexposing the picture to get the proper effect. It was early in the morning, so I didn’t trust my judgment, and instead used the meter button to set the exposure, and then I took half a dozen pictures stepping down the exposure between each picture until I got to the point where I was sure that nothing would be visible anymore.
This picture was the second to last one; the automatic metering let in so much light that you couldn’t even see the mountain (and this is with center-point metering, too! Sigh, the Pentax doesn’t really do automated camera work with low light very well.)

Really like the quality of the light in that one; most impressive, especially with the vehicle lights in the foreground.
