Erosion

The bottom bracket on my bicycle had been making a little tick tick tick sound for the past 5-600 miles, and I finally got around to tearing it apart to repack the bearing races. Imagine my lack of surprise when I pulled the spindle out of the degreaser bucket and discovered these little impact craters (as well as 4 others; 3 at 90° intervals on the other side, and one more about 120° away from these two) in the bearing races.

I had to finish repacking the bearing, because without it I don’t have a bicycle, but I’m going to have to move my next trip to the LBS up a little bit so I can get some cartridge bottom brackets to replace the old cone & cup one with. (And then I might as well resell my spanner and pin wrench, because I won’t be needing them anymore.)
